ALTERNATIVES TO ANIMAL TESTING
We understand and appreciate your concern regarding animal testing of cosmetic products. Bonne Bell does not use animal testing, either in-house or through outside contractors, for any safety or efficacy evaluations of our products. This policy works well with our development programs.
That might lead one to question how, then, are Bonne Bell skin care and cosmetic products tested? At present, there are several testing procedures that are all done by outside clinical labs with physicians' supervision. These tests have been designed to incorporate the volunteer assistance of 100 - 200 human panelists.
Repeat Insult Patch Test - a patch test (test on a small segment of the body) to determine initial irritation plus sensitization potential of a product or ingredient
Cumulative Irritation - 21-day continuous contact patch designed to show skin fatigue and irritation for long-term and/or exaggerated use.
Comedogenicity (Acnegenic) - A patch test followed by skin impressions to test the potential of a product to produce comedones (pimples, plugs) in the skin.
Phototoxity - Checks for the potential of a product containing sunscreens to have an adverse chemical reaction on the skin when exposed to sunlight.
Photoallergy - Checks for the possibility of induced allergic reaction of products with sunscreen exposed to sunlight as they would be used by the consumer.
Sun Protection Factor - Human controlled light exposure study that tells the degree of protection by a sunscreen product. Reported with numeral rating with 2 (minimum) and 30 (maximum).
Clinical Usage Study - Customized exaggerated usage study designed to be the final step in safety evaluations. Panelists use the product for at least one month at double the normal frequency. Their condition is monitored during this time by a dermatologist. Panelists are also requested to comment on the product and its performance.
Bonne Bell research teams also conduct further customized tests that are designed to substantiate claims that would be used for a product, i.e. comparative studies that show product X is superior to product Y. All of these extensive procedures, performed by trained professionals, assure that Bonne Bell products are safe and provide consumers with the features and benefits they offer.
As a company, Bonne Bell continues to assure the consistent quality and safety of all its products. We are and will abide by all government regulations involving the safe manufacture and distribution of our products.
HISTORY OF BONNE BELL
Here's the "Bonne Bell" Story:
Bonne Bell is the story of a man who had a dream and made it come true. It is the story of Jesse G. Bell - a man determined to make a success out of the business he founded.
It was an April night in 1916. Jesse G. Bell, a Kansas salesman, discovered the name Bonne Bell while reading the Saturday Evening Post.
Bonne Bell was the heroine of Emerson Hough's novel "The Man Next Door." Jesse and his wife, Mame Bell, grew to love the character. When a daughter was born to them, it was not surprising they called her Bonne.
After landing a job as a salesman for a Kansas City cosmetic company, he decided this was the kind of business he wanted to start for himself. In 1927 (at the age of 37), he moved his family of five to Cleveland, Ohio to start a cosmetic company named after his daughter.
To say the Bonne Bell business had a meager beginning is putting it mildly. Bell's first 'factory' was the basement of his rented house. He made a few makeup items on a hot plate, then proceeded to sell them door-to-door. His sales approach was simple but disarming: "Are you interested in a package or a product?" Thus he overcame any objection a woman might have to his primitive packaging - such as face powder in a brown paper bag.
1936 was the year of happy reckoning. J.G. Bell was fortunate enough to buy a unique formula from a Cleveland research chemist who compounded it for a dermatologist. He had labeled the formula Rx 1006. Ten-O-Six, as it became known, quickly won public acceptance.
At this time, too, Bell started to direct the company toward the youth market long before the statisticians predicted its great potential. Step by step, J.G. Bell developed a complete range of products for total skin care. His standards for products were high, and while the line has grown tremendously since then, the standards have not changed - every preparation represents careful research and testing to assure high quality performance.
Today, Bonne Bell products are not sold just in the United States, Bonne Bell products can be found in Canada, New Zealand, South America, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Mexico, the Caribbean, Great Britain, Scandinavia, the Middle East and Africa. We also operate a wholly owned subsidiary in Australia.
Namesake and Vice Chairman of the Board, Bonne Bell Eckert continues to add a note of grace to the company. Her feminine viewpoint is reflected in the company's inner councils. Beginning as a laboratory assistant when she was in her teens, Bonne was to eventually become familiar with virtually every aspect of the company's workings.
Jess Bell, grew up in his father's company and became President in 1960. He worked in the labs as a teenager, hit the road as a salesman, was advertising manager and devised new products and packagingóconcentrating on the youth market and sports related products for skiing, tennis and running.
Bonne and Jess, with their enthusiasm, represent a well-balanced leadership dedicated to the principles of their father and company founder, Jesse Grover Bell.
Bonne Bell Cosmetics are manufactured and sold throughout the United States and around the world. We have great plans. Many new products and product lines are on the drawing board, yet, we still sell Ten-O-Six with the same enthusiasm and sincerity. We are confident about our future and our ability to develop creative, unique products and advertising and promotional plans for our customers.
Bonne Bell has come a long way since the first factory in Jesse G. Bell's basement.
When Bonne Bell bought the property now housing the Executive Offices, Jesse Bell wanted something in keeping with the area, but totally different from conventional office buildings. The result is literally a sight to behold. We call it Georgetown Row: a group of handsome colonial townhouses right out of the history books.
In 1977, (our 50th year), we completed the research, manufacturing and distribution plant. This complex houses manufacturing, warehousing, shipping, laboratory facilities and administrative offices. This facility looks more like a Kentucky horse farm than a modern cosmetic plant. In 1995, we added 60,000 square feet to better meet the needs of our U.S., Canadian and other international customers.
A company concerned for its own people will naturally remain concerned for its customers. Not only have Jess and Bonne made a nice and happy environment for their employees, but also a healthy one.
As a forerunner of fitness in business, Jess Bell encourages his employees to be fit and stay healthy. Exercise and the active outdoor life have always played an important role in the development and growth of Bonne Bell.
Throughout the years, Bonne Bell has helped sponsor the U.S. Ski Team, National Ski Patrol, and NASTAR. With the support of the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association, numerous local tennis projects have been sponsored. Added to this are bicycle races, 10K races, running camps and clinics, plus many charitable events.
In 1977, as a result of Jess Bell's own commitment to health, he started a fitness program for his employees. To promote the program, incentives were given to employees who exercised, lost weight and quit smoking. Smoking is banned in all working areas. Employees have access to the company's jogging track, tennis and volleyball courts, weight room and Jazzercise classes. A completely equipped gymnasium with lockers and shower facilities are also available.
This kind of commitment has not gone unnoticed. Jess Bell was awarded a Special Citation by the President's Council on Physical Fitness, the Kenneth H. Cooper Prize for Aerobic Leadership, a Special Award from the Women's Sports Foundation, and Healthy American Fitness Leader award presented by the U.S. Jaycees.
His own achievements in fitness include marathons, ultra-marathons, and becoming a trustee of Outward Bound mountain climbing expeditions. We believe the Bonne Bell line of quality products, teamed with physical fitness, are an unbeatable combination for beautiful skin.
THE BIRTH OF LIP SMACKERS
Bonne Bell is a story of a man who had a dream and made it come true. In 1927, Jesse G. Bell started the cosmetic company and named it after his daughter. Jesse directed the company toward the youth market long before the statisticians predicted its great potential. One of the most popular brands to come out of the company is Lip Smacker. Bonne Bell has been flavoring lips with Lip Smacker, the WORLD'S favorite flavored lip gloss, since 1973. The first fruity flavor to hit the market was Strawberry. Today, 33 additional fruity flavors are sold worldwide.
Named by Jess Bell, CEO of Bonne Bell, they were originally made as a lip gloss for the outdoor person, but there was no flavoring. So, in order to be different, back in our development lab in Lakewood, Ohio, our chemists formulated the first flavored Lip Smacker. Bonne Bell became the first company to put out a lip product of this type. Not only was the flavor innovative, but the stick size and concentration of the flavor were a first in the industry.
WHERE DO LIP SMACKERS COME FROM?
Thanks to modern science, any flavor (synthetic interpretations of natural flavor) can be duplicated, such as Mango, Bubble Gum and Guava, just to name a few. These flavoring ingredients are also used widely in processed and prepackaged foods and beverages. In developing the individual flavors, our research staff works with independent essential oil manufacturers to achieve the best-intended flavor. The finished flavor submission is often composed of two dozen or more ingredients and may take several months of refinements before the final approval by labs. Many of our combination flavors are achieved by some creative blending right in our own labs. Lip Smackers are also sensitivity tested by outside clinical laboratories to make sure our products are of the highest quality. Each new Lip Smacker is also tested to ensure complete safety to the consumer.
The raw materials which make up Lip Smackers are melted together and the warm liquid is poured into containers. The flavor is added at the last minute to ensure the freshest taste and smell. The stick is then sent through a cooling tunnel which makes it solid.
